New Anthology From Silver Boomer Books

The mailman brought my author copy of a new anthology from Silver Boomer Books today. I have a poem and a prose piece in the book which covers myriad holidays in a variety of ways--stories, poetry and memoir.

Independence Day In Chicago is a memoir piece about the way we celebrated the 4th of July where I grew up. My poem, Flag Day Thoughts, is only two verses but commemorates Flag Day, which is celebrated on June 14th each year. You can read the story here where it is published under a different title.

The book runs continuous quotes at the bottom of each page--an interesting addition. It has a larger than normal font size so would be a good gift for someone with vision difficulties.

Silver Boomer Books has several anthologies in print, nearing a dozen. I have been in one other book they have published. Flashlight Memories is filled with stories about memories of learning to read, loving to read and more--all about reading and childhood. My story in that book is titled My Path To Books. You can listen to me read the story here.

Flashlight Memories

Flashlight Memories is available in paperback or a kindle edition at Amazon. The new anthology, A Quilt of Holidays is in paperback only at this time.

Needed--Holiday Stories

Silver Boomer Books has need of submissions for an anthology of holiday stories. The working title of the planned book is Times To Remember--A Pocketful of Holidays. I hope they end up keeping that title as I find it most appealing. It would make me pick up the book when browsing in a bookstore.

Dixon Hearne edited a book called Thanksgiving To Christmas and wanted to create a sequel highlighting other holidays of the year. You can read more about Mr. Hearne and the proposed book here.

Becky Haigler, Editor/Partner of Silver Boomer Books says that stories on Thanksgiving and Christmas will be accepted but your chances of acceptance will be higher if your story, essay or poem highlights another holiday in the year.

Scroll down this page to the section headed How We Want It for full guidelines on the submission process. Follow the guidelines carefully. Payment is $5 for poetry and $10 for prose plus one copy of the book. It's not much in comparison to some other anthologies. You need to decide if publication and a bio about you is worth taking a smaller amount of pay. I have had a story in one Silver Boomer book and was pleased with the copy I received.

Give thought to sending something about the other holidays we celebrate. Look at the list below and see if something acts as a trigger for a story or poem. You may think of others, too.

1.  President's Day
2.  Valentine's Day
3.  St. Patrick's Day
4.  Easter
5.  Passover
6.  Flag Day
7.  Independence Day
8.  Mother's Day
9.  Father's Day
10. Arbor Day
11. Labor Day
12. Halloween
13. Veteran's Day

And yes, they will accept reprints if you let them know where the story was previously published.

Adding One More Anthology

A new anthology showed up in my mailbox yesterday. Flashlight Memories was published by Silver Boomer Books. It's a collection of nonfiction stories about books and reading, some poetry regarding the same, as well.

I have a story in the book titled "My Path To Books" which is one I'd written long before I saw the call for submissions for this anthology. Reading has been a love of mine ever since my mother first read a picture book to me about a Mr. Flibbertyjibbet. It was the spark that ignited my passion for books that has lasted a lifetime.

Anyone who enjoys reading and loves books would probably find this group of stories a satisfying read. You can find it at Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Memories-Ginny-Greene/dp/0982624352/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302617909&sr=8-1 for a reduced price of $11.90. You might also be able to locate it at your local bookstore. If the store does not have it, they are usually happy to order the book for a customer.

Go to http://silverboomerbooks.com/submissions.html to learn about other calls for submission from Silver Boomer Books. They do not pay as well as some of the other anthologies, but they produce a nice book and were good people to work with.
