A Community For Writers And Those Interested In Writing

This is the cheerful graphic that will greet you at Linda Carlson's Writer's Block. Linda is the owner/moderator of this interactive writing communtiy and Wordsmith, its offshoot. These two sister sites are all about giving writers a chance to gather in a community, or a neighborhood, for those with an interest in writing. It's not necessary to be a writer to join and enjoy the fruits of the groups.

Linda is gifted with the ability to use graphics to illustrate the stories and poems posted. I use the term 'gifted' because her interpretation of other's writing can sometimes be almost magical. Linda has waved her magic wand over several of the nonfiction stories and poems I've posted and when I see what she's done, I almost always am bowled over. To see a sample, look at this memoir story I posted to see what Linda did with it. She had asked me to send a photo of my grandmother. I was thrilled with the result.

Because there is so much to see on these sites, Linda has a page that will help you navigate easily. It's all in one place for you. Click on each topic and read, then go back to the list and click on another. Besides helping navigate this particular site, I found it to be a fab lesson in learning all the little things on the top tool bar. I knew many of them but a few were new to me.

Recently, Linda has added a section of Writing Opportunities by linking to a blog that lists places looking for submissions from writers. I spent some time with it last evening and was wowed by the numerous places that were new to me.

Start here. You'll see the poster above, then scroll down the page until you find the list of topics and start reading.(On most of the pages, you must scroll down to find what you want or click on a link that will take you to a new page.) Next, you'll want to read some of the other writers posts and comments. And finally, you can post work of your own. No worries about being accepted by an editor. You post your work here for the enjoyment of others. No one will critique your work, unless you specifically ask them to. Positive comments are allowed, negatives are not.

You do have to create an account to become a member of this writing community. But I assure you that it is free, easy and has no bearing on anything else you do. Websites which require creating an account do so to keep spammers out, so it's to your benefit. Once you have created your account, bookmark the site. I am considered signed in each time I return so am automatically taken to the page, no having to put in the user name and password each time. See how easy it is.

This is a place where writes can post, read the writing of others, chat with other writers or people interested in writing, and feel comfortable. Put in a nutshell--it's comfort food for writers! To get the most out of it, you need to participate.

One word of caution:  Remember that anything you post on this site, or any other, is considered published, and you will not be able to submit and sell to an editor except as a reprint. My personal solution to this problem is to post work at Writer's Block that has already been published elsewhere first.

A Place of Interest For Readers and Writers

Linda Pharaoh Carlson

Linda Pharaoh Carlson is a poet and owner/moderator of The WordSmith website. Linda is masterful at adding the perfect graphics and music to the stories and poems featured. She adds magic to a poem or story that writers submit to her. Take a look and you'll see what I mean.

Recently, she has updated the website. Read about what she has been doing in the newsletter. Then go to the Home Page to see the new look. It's really fabulous. One of my favorite spots is the Book  of Favorites that has turning pages where a visitor can click on a page and read the poem or story featured. And yes, some of my work is included there. Maybe I'm a bit prejudiced but I think it's a pretty neat idea and love the stories and poems Linda selected to be featured.

With another click, you can go to Kathe Campbell's author page that Linda has put together to feature this Montana mountain author. Kathe has been spotlighted in my blog more than once. Linda intends to create author pages for others in the near future.

You'll find the Featured Story and Poem near the top of the Home Page, just one more click to read each one. Farther down the page click on Submission Guidelines, then go on to read news of some of the WordSmith authors.

Near the top left, you'll see a few lines that offer the option of signing up for an account to take  full advantage of all The WordSmith has to offer, along with the Writers Forum that Linda also hosts. This is not mandatory, only for those who want to participate fully in all these websites have to offer. Linda has a complete explanation as to why she offers this choice.

Spend some time at The WordSmith, bookmark it, and return to read more of the entertaining stories and poems Linda Pharaoh Carlson offers both readers and writers. If you like it, pass it on to others.

Wordsmith Plays Up Poems and Prose

Linda Carlson, moderator of The Wordsmith website, has a gift. She is able to add spectacular graphics to poetry and prose that sets them off to perfection. The most recent effort she has done for me is to publish my poem "A Heavenly Gift."  She has captured this poem about the Kansas tallgrass prairie perfectly.

After the poem itself, there is a rolling show of Kansas praire scenes that take me home immediately. Look at her version of my poem.

This poem was a first place winner in the Themed Category of our Kansas Authors state contest several years ago and has been published several times.

The Wordsmith

I've recently renewed acquaintance with a writer whom I knew a number of years ago when we both had work published at a website called 2TheHeart. The website began publishing less and less, and the community of writers moved on in other directions.
Linda Carlson is an accomplished poet and prose writer who now showcases her work and that of other writers at http://thewordsmith.faithweb.com/a_ws_home_1.html  Click on Enter and a wonderful world of stories and poems to read will open to you. On the page where you select stories and poetry to read, there is also a submission link near the bottom of the page for writers, published or unpublished, to submit their work for the website.
If your work appears on  The Wordsmith, I guarantee that it will be showcased beautifully. Linda's entire site is filled with lovely graphics and backgrounds. I sent her one of the stories I had published in a Chicken Soup for the Soul book, and I was amazed at what she did to make it sparkle and shine. Take a look at "Wish Upon A Star" at http://thewordsmith.faithweb.com/njk_wishuponastar.html
Spend some time at The Wordsmith and you'll end up with a fine appreciation of what Linda Carlson has accomplished  and an admiration for her, as well.

Book Review: Second Bloom

I recently read Christina Hamlett's newest book titled Second Bloom. 'Intriguing title' I thought when I first picked it ...
