Sensory Detail Writing Exercise

Try a writing exercise having to do with a couple of our senses. The alarm clock above might make two different sounds. Perhaps the ticking of each second is audible, and the bells make another sound when the alarm goes off.

Write a description of the sound of the following:
  • a team of horses
  • train
  • car backfiring
  • crying baby
  • jet
  • waves on a beach
  • a whistle
  • alarm clock

Now, try the same with this list but using taste as the sense:
  • dill pickle
  • ice cream
  • cough medicine
  • coffee
  • peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • toothpaste
  • cinnamon roll
  • buttered dinner roll

  1. Nancy,my gratitude for your great blog
    encouraging me, like ice-cold lemonade,
to continue writing during these lazy days of
    summer.
